What is a Delegate and How Do You Become One?

I promised in my candidate statement when I ran to become a Delegate that if I became one I would make sure to keep you all in the loop and help you understand exactly what this position entails.  Through this blog (which I will also post to social media) I will keep that promise.  

I will start off by answering some questions you may have.  

What does a DSCC (Democratic State Central Committee) Delegate do?  

A DSCC Delegate is the representative for their committee and specific district. Delegates:

1. Attend the annual State Democrats Convention (this year it will be virtual), 
2. Network with other Democrats, 
3. Elect California Democratic Party officers, 
4. Promote the California Democratic Party agenda, 
5. Endorse candidates for statewide, legislative and congressional office,
6. Vote to endorse resolutions and ballot measures, and 
7. Generally represent their constituency with the California Democratic Party.

How do you become a DSCC Delegate?

There are several ways you can become a member of the DSCC (also known as “Delegates”).  Delegates come from the following sources:

1. Elected through California Democratic Party’s (58) County Committees
2. Appointed by Democratic Party Elected Officials or the highest vote-getting Democrat if no Democrat was elected, based off the most recent election, 
3. Elected through their Assembly District (ADDs), or
4. Additional DSCC Delegate positions come from the DNC State party Delegates (CA DNC members, Current/Past Officers Statewide Officers and Regional Directors, California Democratic Council, California Young Democrats, and Statewide Chartered Organizations (chair only).

How did Jessica Speiser become a DSCC Delegate?  

I first tried to become a Delegate by running for election through my Assembly District.  I lost that election, but made a strong showing with your support and will forever be thankful for that.  

The night I found out I lost, I was informed that one can also become a Delegate by being appointed by a "Democratic Party Elected Official."  With that information, I quickly contacted representatives of Congresswoman Anna Eshoo's office asking for such appointment explaining I had a passion for the role and will work hard for the Democratic Party and our District if given the chance.  I am ecstatic to say, the Congresswoman decided to appoint me.  

In addition to my service to some of you as an LASD Trustee, I look forward to serving all of you as a Delegate to the California Democratic Party.  Thank you so much for your support in this endeavor.  You will not regret it.
