10th Site Study Session, Student Performance Data, and Health Education Curriculum Adoption11/2/2022 The Monday, November 7, 2022, LASD Board will start with a Study Session solely focused on 10th Site Planning at 4:30pm. Contemporaneous public comments may only be made in person in the LASD Board Room. If you plan to participate in person, wearing a mask is recommended in accordance with CDPH guidelines. We will continue to use the Zoom webinar platform for community members to follow our meetings at home, but public comment will not be allowed on it. If you cannot attend in person, and have a comment that you would like the LASD Board to consider in its discussion, please email all of us at [email protected] by 5pm on Saturday, 11/5/22. To register to watch the 10th Site Study Session part of the Board meeting from the comfort of your home, click here. There is currently no materials to review for this meeting. I expect all materials to be available at the meeting and made available online after the meeting.
In this part of the meeting, the Board will study updated information regarding long term facilities planning and the 10th site. It will include a review of information from 2020 regarding community-generated options for a permanent location for Bullis Charter School and updated historical context and data since 2020. No decisions will be made during this study session. The purpose of the meeting is to get the Board and the community on the same page as to where we left off in 2020 when the global pandemic hit and update context and history up until the present such that the Board can move forward in finishing the Community Engagement Process started in 2019 to determine a long term solution for Bullis Charter School and the use of the 10th Site. After a closed session, the Board will start its open session for its Regular Meeting at 7:00pm. As stated above, contemporaneous public comments may only be made in person in the LASD Board Room. The Zoom webinar platform is set up for community members to follow our meetings at home, but public comment will not be allowed on it. If you cannot attend in person, and have a comment that you would like the LASD Board to consider in its decision making, please email all of us at [email protected] by 5pm on Saturday, 11/5/22. To register to watch the regular board meeting from the comfort of your home, click here (it is a different link than the study session). The entire agenda and supporting documentation for the regular meeting can be found here. Before we get started with regular business, back by popular demand of the Board, representatives from each and every LASD school will present at board meetings throughout the year. Gardner Bullis will kick it back off by sharing information on their co-teaching and reading programs. It will be so nice to have this tradition back! First up, Greg Drummond of the Curriculum & Instruction Department will give a Student Performance Data Update. This is a discussion item and Greg's presentation can be found under agenda item I.1 using the link provided above. The data shows, as highlighted in this week's Los Altos Town Crier, that according to the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASP) LASD has been spared from statewide K-8 learning loss. However, LASD can always, and constantly strives to, do better. As is often the case for our district, we still have work to do as it relates to our Hispanic, Economically Disadvantaged. Special Education, and English Learner students. Results show their results fall below the aggregate of the district, but that was the case prior to the pandemic also. Either way, staff has plans for more supports for these students (and all students) to move the needle. Next, Dr. Carrie Bosco will conduct a Hearing on the Health Education Curriculum Adoption. This is an action item, and Carrie's presentation can be found under agenda item I.2 and 3. The District was required to update its health curriculum by the California Healthy Youth Act (CHYA), that requires all sexual health instruction and materials must be medically accurate, may not promote religious doctrine, and must be inclusive of all sexual orientations and genders. The law is intended to ensure that students develop the knowledge and skills necessary to:
With that in mind, the District piloted the Health Connected curriculum and the participant results were favorable with 100% of teachers finding the lessons age appropriate with most students and teachers feeling the materials were clear and easy to understand. The Board is asked to approve the adoption of the Health Connected curriculum. Then, Erik Walukiewicz will give us an update on Sharing of the Parcel Tax Proceeds with Bullis Charter School. This is an action item and BCS's report of how it expended its portion of Measure GG can be found under agenda item I.4. Every year, under the requirements of Measure GG, BCS must give a written report showing that it used their portion of the Measure GG parcel tax proceeds to pay for teacher's salaries in accordance with law and the measure. The Board is asked to approve the report. Erik will next present a requested Appointment to the Citizens Bond Oversight Committee (CBOC). This an action item and his memo and the citizen's application can be found under agenda item I.5. The CBOC is a committee whose sole charge is to ensure the district expends the bond proceeds for the purposes described in the bond ballot language. The Board is asked to approve the appointment of Steve Brown to the CBOC as a public member at large. An Approval of a Contract for Lighting Control Repairs presentation will follow. This is an action item and Erik's memo in support of the contract and the contract can be found under agenda item I.6. The Board is asked to approve this contract for $18,500 to replace failing exterior lighting controllers at Almond, Egan, and Springer schools. Erik will next present a Notice of Completion with Lanlogic. This is an action item and Erik's memo in support and the notice can be found under agenda item I.7. The Board is asked to approve the District filing this Notice of Completion for the district-wide telephone upgrade project. This is a bureaucratic step required to finish this project. Last, but definitely not least, the Board has another round of Board Policy Updates to discuss. The Board Policies can be found under agenda items I.8 and 9. As stated in prior updates, the California School Boards Association (CSBA) frequently advises local school districts on updates and deletions to board policies, bylaws and regulations based on recent changes to Federal and California state law and regulations. Please note, this is just the highlights of what is on the agenda for the 11/7/22 meeting. You can inform yourself about the rest of the agenda at the link provided above. As always, feel free to email me with any questions.
