Notes on LASD

What to Expect at the 3/12/18 LASD Board Meeting

3/10/2018

Open session starts at 7pm in the LASD Board Room at 201 Covington Rd.  The entire agenda can be found here.

Oak School will present.  Oak plans to present on the evolution of the 4th Grade California Mission Project.

Randy Kenyon will present the Solar Lighting Update.  He will let the board know the progress made on the lighting issues at a couple of the schools.  This is a discussion item, there will be no action taken by the board.

Sandra McGonagle and Greg Drummond will present the Winter Student Data Update.  This is a discussion item, there will be no action taken by the board.  Their presentation can be found using the link above under agenda item I.2.  Their presentation will highlight what learning progress has been made by all students and certain demographic groups since the fall.

Sandra McGonagle and Greg Drummond will also present the Summer School Program Update.  This is a discussion item, there will be no action taken by the board.  Their presentation can be found using the link above under agenda item I.3.   Of note, is that they have secured a partnership with the Silicon Valley YMCA to not only educate those children that need the most learning help, but also make sure they have fun through out the day and week.

Randy Kenyon will present the 2nd Interim Financial Report.  I know this is what everyone has been waiting for all year... :)  This is an action item.  His presentation and the actual report can be found using the link above under agenda item I.4.  In his presentation he highlights the districts differences in revenues and expenses as compared to the approved budget.

Randy Kenyon will ask the board to approve a Proposition 39 Energy Grant Project.  This is an action item and his presentation can be found at the link above under agenda item I.5. Randy is asking the board to approve energy saving lighting upgrades that will, for the most part, be paid for by state Proposition 39 Energy grant funds.

Randy Kenyon is standing up yet again to present a Egan Roof Project for the board's approval.  This is an action item and his presentation can be found at the link above under agenda item I.6.  Randy is asking the board to approve the repair of a roof at one of Egan's buildings that has leaked for for years and the replacement of the aging HVAC system located on top of it, among other things.  There is a grant from PG&E that can be allocated to the project, but it still a significant expenditure from the district.

Randy Kenyon will next present the
Actuarial Valuation of Retiree Health Benefits Liability.  This is a discussion item, no action will be taken.  His presentation can be found under agenda I.7 using the link found above.   Randy will be updating the board on how exactly the district keeps track of its liability as it relates to retiree health benefits and how the district prepares for the same.

Jeffrey Baier will present the Site Advisory Task Force governing document.  This is an action item. The document can be found under agenda item I.11. The board will be asked to approve the document.  The Board will have to decide whether this revised document encompasses the makeup of and actions needed from the task force to help the Board make an informed decision regarding what type of school should be placed at the 10th site.

Mr. Baier will also present a contract with Thoughtexchange for the board's approval.  This is an action item.  His presentation can be found under agenda item I.12.  The district is hoping to use Thoughtexchange to help us get input from our diverse community on not only the 10th Site, but also ensuring our district serves up an equitable education to all students we educate.

Lastly, Mr. Baier will be presenting a Resolution Demanding Federal Gun Control Action to Prevent Death and Injury for the board's approval.  This is an action item and the resolution can be found under agenda I.15.  In light of Sandy Hook and the most recent tragedy in Parkland, Florida, staff is asking us to approve a resolution asking our federal government and local congressional representatives for tighter gun control laws to keep the children in our schools safer.  Resolution also emphasizes that LASD supports organized student and
adult ally action to amplify students’ voices and work toward creating a future where children are no longer murdered by gun violence in schools, including such activities as walkouts, sit-ins, civics training, voter registration campaigns, and other acts of peaceful protest.

Please note, this is just the highlights of what is on the agenda for 3/12/2018 meeting.  You can inform yourself about the rest of the agenda at the link provided above.  As always, feel free to email me with any questions.
