The following is an understanding of what to expect from the LASD Board of Trustees' first board meeting since schools were physically closed on March 13th. The structure and "place" have changed in order to follow the shelter in place rules of the Santa Clara County Public Health Department and to keep everyone (board members and community members alike) healthy and safe. The board will commence open session at 6:30pm and it will be held using the Zoom webinar platform. To register in advance for the meeting, click on this link. The entire agenda and supporting documentation for this week's meeting can be found here.
First up on the agenda, Sandra McGonagle will be presenting LASD's COVID-19 Response and Impacts. This is a discussion item and her presentation can be found under agenda item B.1 using the link above. Sandra's presentation goes over what has already been implemented and plans for iterations in the Emergency Remote Learning that we find ourselves in. Sandra emphasizes that we need to make room for "flexibility, grace and understanding" as we continue down this virtual school path for the remainder of the school year. Next up, Randy Kenyon will present the Financial Update. This is a discussion item and his presentation can be found under agenda item B.2. His financial update goes over the COVID-19 impacts on LASD's bottom line as it relates to property taxes, state budget, teacher and staff pension (STRS and PERS), LASD revenue losses and decreased expenditures, and state and federal emergency aid. Randy also gives the Board options and ideas of issues we will be facing in the future and how we may plan the 20/21 budget in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Then, Erin Green will present each and every LASD school's Comprehensive School Safety Plan for approval by the Board. All 10 plans (9 schools and the district office) and Erin's presentation can be found under agenda item B.3. This is an action item and the Board is asked to approve all 10 plans. The California Education Code requires that each school have a Comprehensive School Safety Plan and requires annual review by the school site and approval by the Board. The requirements not only focus on physical safety, but also on emotional wellbeing and safety. Jeff Baier will next present Memorandums of Understanding with the Los Altos Teachers Association and California School Employees Association Chapter 103 for Board approval. This is an action item and these memorandums of understanding can be found under agenda items B.4 and B.5, respectively. These memorandums are needed to clarify teacher and staff rights and responsibilities in the time of COVID-19. Lastly, Jeff plans to discuss Future Board Meeting Planning. This is a discussion item and his presentation can be found under agenda B.6. It includes a list of agenda items the Board must complete by the end of the school year. After this agenda item, the Board will adjourn to closed session. Please note, this is just the highlights of what is on the agenda for the 4/13/20 meeting. You can inform yourself about the rest of the agenda at the link provided above. As always, feel free to email me with any questions. Comments are closed.
