The closed session for our 3/9/20 meeting begins at 5:30pm. The board will reconvene for open session starting around 7pm in the LASD Board Room. The entire agenda and supporting documentation can be found here.
Every year, representatives from each LASD school present at a board meeting. At this meeting, representatives from Loyola Elementary School will update the Board on how they "transfer learning to real life." None too soon, the next thing on our agenda is LASD's Infectious Disease/Pandemic Response Plan. This is an action item and it can be found under agenda item I.1. The Board is asked to approve this extensive plan to not only react to the current international crisis we are in, but any other such type of infectious disease emergency in the future. The plan is highly detailed and leaves no stone unturned. The plan outlines how each player at the County and LASD level needs to act and report to as it relates to the disease and how it relates to operation of education while still in session and if we are required to close schools. I highly recommend you read it. However, here is some important take aways if you do not have time:
There is no known case of COVID-19 in LASD as of yet. If we keep on following the enhanced hygiene and cleaning guidelines, self quarantine if we are sick, and keep safe distances from others, it will go a long way toward curbing the spread of the virus. To keep up to date on the latest information from the County, check out their website or follow them on Facebook, Instagram (@scc_publichealth) or Twitter (@HealthySCC). Furthermore, LASD will distribute information as directed by the County. Next, Randy Kenyon asks that the Board approve the 2nd Interim Financial Report. This is an action item and his presentation and report can be found under agenda item I.2. This report reflects actual revenues and expenditures as of 1/31/20 and shows our financial outlook was better than expected when we approved the budget in June 2019, but we are not without our challenges. Challenges include that for this year we are slated to be below our reserve target of 8-10%, recession is likely in near future, our teacher's compensation is not competitive, our aging facilities are straining our resources and and BCS growth directly hits our bottom line. Lastly, Randy asks the Board to approve a resolution to Increase Developers Fees. This is an action item and the resolution and justification study can be found under agenda item I.4. The Board is asked regularly to approve an increase in these fees and the law limits how much. What is important to note, is that it is never enough. Please note, this is just the highlights of what is on the agenda for the 3/9/2020 meeting. You can inform yourself about the rest of the agenda at the link provided above. As always, feel free to email me with any questions. Comments are closed.
