Monday, December 14, 2020 LASD Board meeting will start its open session at 7:00pm and it will be held using the Zoom webinar platform. To register in advance for the meeting, click here. The entire agenda and supporting documentation for this week's meeting can be found here.
First up, the Board will go through its annual Reorganization. On election years that also involves newly (re)elected board members taking their oaths of office. This year, Steve Taglio and I will start off with our oaths of office and swear to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of California against all enemies, foreign and domestic," among other things. Then the Board will elect from its members a President, Vice President, and Clerk. If all goes well, Vaishali ("Shali") Sirkay will become our next Board President and Steve Taglio will become our next Board Vice President. In normal times, this would be followed by a round of musical chairs, but because we are on Zoom, that won't be happening. If you really miss the tradition, feel free to move our boxes around on your screen! Next the Board is asked to approve the 2021 Board Procedures (not much different from years prior) and then discuss memberships on various Board subcommittees. Then, it is business as usual with Shali Sirkay presiding over and managing the rest of the meeting. First up, Jeff Baier and Sandra McGonagle will give us their latest update on School Reopening. This is a discussion item and the presentation can be found under agenda item I.1 linked to above. The update includes the percentages of families opting into Blending Learning or, alternatively, Virtual School, for all grade levels. Among other things, it also details how our 6th graders fared on Math Placement. Next up, Randy Kenyon will present the 1st Interim Financial Report. This is an action item and Randy asks that we approve the report. His presentation and the report can be found under agenda item I.2. The report shows that LASD's financial situation is currently better than expected considering the pandemic and the country's uncertain economic situation, but that there are many uncertainties awaiting us going forward including whether our revenues remain constant and what extra or decreased expenses we may have when we crawl out of the pandemic and expected recession. Lastly, Sandra will present the 2020-21 Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) Budget Overview for Parents. This is an action item and her presentation and overview can be found under agenda item I.3. The Board is asked to approve this Budget Overview that details how LASD spent federal CARES Act funds to meet the needs of our high needs/unduplicated students. Please note, these are just the highlights of what to expect at our 12/14/2020 meeting. You can inform yourself about the rest of the agenda at the link provided above. As always, feel free to email me with any questions. Comments are closed.
