The Monday, March 21, 2022, LASD Board meeting will start its open session at 7:00pm and public participation will continue to happen using the Zoom webinar platform. The LASD Board will be meeting physically together following COVID safe protocols in the LASD Board Room. To register in advance for the meeting, click here. The entire agenda and supporting documentation for this week's meeting can be found here.
First up on the agenda, Jeff Baier will give a COVID-19 Update. This is a discussion item and his presentation can be found using the link above under agenda item H.1. LASD, following COVID safe protocols and the modified mask requirements, continues to keep COVID from spreading in our schools. Next, Board President Steve Taglio, and our consultants from Leadership Associates, will give the Board a Superintendent Search Update. This is a discussion item and their presentation can be found under agenda item H.2. Leadership Associates has met with many different stakeholders across the district to get their feedback and is compiling results from a survey to ensure we get and incorporate vital feedback into our decision making involving the next LASD Superintendent. Then, Randy Kenyon will present the 3-Year Deferred Maintenance Plan. This is an action item and Randy's presentation (and sometime today, Friday, March 18th, supporting documentation) can be found under agenda item H.3. Randy and the district's architect, Lisa Gelfand, will present a 3-year plan for maintenance and/or replacement of HVAC systems, lights, and roofs across the district with a price tag of over $41,000,000. Randy will then present an update on our Universal Meals Program. This is a discussion item and his presentation can be found under agenda item H.4. As discussed before, the state is mandating that all schools offer free breakfast and lunch to all students starting in the 22/23 school year. The state and federal government will reimburse up to $7.00/student per day. There is also funding for facilities upgrades (roughly $100,000) to implement this new policy. The short of Randy's update is that neither the $7/student per day or the $100,000 will be enough for us to institute this policy and maintain it. We will have sunk (one time) costs of over $350,000 and ongoing costs of at least $1.1 million dollars a year. Sometimes you ask how you can help our school district. Here is how: contact your local state senator Josh Becker and/or your local assemblyman Marc Berman and let them know they need to tell Governor that basic aid districts like Los Altos School District (and Mountain View Whisman, and MVLA) are having a tough time shouldering the cost of unfunded (Universal TK) or underfunded mandates like Universal Meals and need more funding to implement these new policies. Last, but not least, Jeff will present the 2022/23 Board Meeting Calendar. This is an action item and the calendar can be found under agenda H.5. Please note, this is just the highlights of what is on the agenda for the 3/21/22 meeting. You can inform yourself about the rest of the agenda at the link provided above. As always, feel free to email me with any questions.
