Why Reelect Jessica Speiser to the Los Altos School Board?
I am running for reelection to the LASD School Board to:
In my second term as an LASD Trustee, I will continue to fight and advocate for the educational excellence and social-emotional stability for all LASD students no matter their socio-economic status, race/national origin, language, or learning style in a manner flexible to these unprecedented times. LASD schools are among the top in the state because we have a community that values public education as a foundation for future success. I will work to ensure that does not change in the face of this global pandemic. It is imperative our teachers, staff and school sites have the resources and support needed to educate LASD students whether it is in the classroom or in the form of remote learning. Each and every one of our LASD schools is a California Distinguished School and 5 of our 9 schools are National Blue Ribbon Schools. I wholeheartedly believe that this success is due entirely to the support of our community of parents, teachers, administrators, students and local residents and we will continue to rely on these strong partnerships to get us through this storm.
Furthermore, I will focus on making the hard decisions needed to bolster LASD’s long-term financial viability while doing what is required to ensure the district attracts and retains top notch teachers and staff that make LASD the exceptional district it is. All financial forecasts in the wake of this continued coronavirus pandemic point to a continued severe recession on our horizon. In order to weather the financial downturn, Trustees will need to evaluate and prioritize cuts to the budget in such a way that does not significantly damage our excellent program or alter the strong partnership we have nurtured with our teachers, staff and community over the years. I am prepared to tackle this complex problem head on with the input of, and in the best interest of, all parties involved (first and foremost, the kids).
Lastly, I will continue facilitating strong communication lines between the school district and the community as a whole. Since joining the LASD Board of Trustees in December 2016, I have been acutely focused on ensuring the Board and District emphasize transparency and engagement with the community. I have used this website in the Notes on LASD section, Facebook, and Nextdoor to publicize board meetings, highlight what to expect, make announcements, and concisely summarize what the District is up to and how to stay involved. Furthermore, I have regularly hosted office hours at coffee shops, the farmer’s market and even online to make sure all community members have an outlet for questions and concerns regarding the Los Altos School District.
